Tomatoes, Tomatoes, Tomatoes

By Wardeh on November 3, 2008

Last week I got tomatoes from the same farm where we buy chickens, eggs, and turkeys. They usually don’t sell their tomatoes, but were through putting up their own supply and let me reap the harvest from their still-producing 35 tomato plants. The plants are under a greenhouse cover and still flourising as if it [...]

Sprout-Purple Cabbage-Pumpkin Seed-Tomato Salad

Sprout-Purple Cabbage-Pumpkin Seed-Tomato Salad

By Wardeh on August 23, 2008

I can’t believe how much I’ve enjoyed this salad. Yumm just doesn’t describe it. Layered at the bottom of the bowl is a layer of mixed sprouts (alfalfa-red clover-fenugreek sprouts). Next, a generous scoop of the salad I mentioned yesterday — shredded purple cabbage, mung bean sprouts and lentil sprouts, tossed in our favorite dressing. [...]

Making Tomato Sauce

By Wardeh on September 12, 2007

Following the directions in the Ball Blue Book, I made tomato sauce yesterday with all the organic tomatoes we were given. I ended up with 11 quarts. Since 45 pounds makes about 7 quarts, I figure I was working with 70 pounds of tomatoes. Whew! I am game for more, but now that I’ve spent [...]

Wonderful Tomatoes

By Wardeh on September 11, 2007

Tomatoes! My favorite fruit. A friend has access to the abundance of extra organic tomatoes from a local farm. She gave us 3 huge boxes of them yesterday.
That gives me some work to do today, making tomato sauce. I’ve never done it before.
I’d love to get more of these tomatoes. She said they’ll have extras [...]

Beef Roast with Tomatoes, White Beans and Brown Rice

By Wardeh on September 29, 2006

I called last night’s skillet dish Beef Roast with Tomatoes, White Beans and Brown Rice.
I put a grass-fed beef chuck roast in the crockpot yesterday morning, covered in water and salted and peppered. I could have added sliced onion, but didn’t take the time.
I also had another crockpot cooking up the white beans.
Then when I [...]

Beef Stew with Garden Tomatoes & Brown Jasmine Rice

By Wardeh on September 19, 2006

The tomatoes and herbs add wonderful flavor to this stew. Feel free to add other chopped vegetables, such as potatoes, carrots or celery during the last 1/2 hour of simmering.

2 pounds beef stew meat or sirloin tip steak, cubed (preferably grass-fed)
1 onion, diced
2 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
filtered water
4 to 6 ripe garden tomatoes (or [...]
