Sprouting Beans: Lentils, Mung Beans, and Garbanzo Beans (Chickpeas)

sprouted-mung-beans

Beans are among the easiest of foods to sprout. Actually, sprouting is very easy in general, but here I will discuss beans. Soak 1-1/3 cups of beans overnight in pure water. Use a 1/2 gallon mason jar or other similarly-sized container. I like using 1/2 gallon mason jars with sprout screens best. But for the garbanzo beans, I’ve been using a stainless steel pot. I don’t know why. Well, yes I do. I’ve run out of jars. So a pot works. [...]

Sprout Log and Sprout Pricing

Many of you know that we have been growing and eating a significant amount of sprouts. Except for shredded carrots, shredded goat cheese, and rice cake crumbles (used as croutons), our salads for the last three months have been exclusively composed of home-grown sprouts. I have been growing these sprouts: lentil; mung bean; radish; and [...]

Sprouting v. Hydroponics and Other Questions

Update (4/17/09) — Please see my comment below for further clarification of my thoughts on hydroponics. The book I got yesterday is called “Sprouts: The Miracle Food” by Steve Meyerowitz. It is subtitled with “The Complete Guide to Sprouting.” I am thrilled that it is a relatively new publication (1999). I have been reading it [...]

More Sprouting

In my Azure order that came Monday, I received another set of 3 Sproutmaster trays. Now I have 7 trays. Plus I have one sprout screen that I interchange on about 3 different jars, using it to rinsing them in turn (if only I could find my cheesecloth!). With my increase of growing supplies, I [...]

Successful Sprouted Buckwheat Breakfast-

4 out 5 members of the family loved breakfast this morning! I’d say that is a success. The person who didn’t care for it reported a willingness to have it again, though. After rinsing the buckwheat sprouts that I began two nights ago, I put some in each cereal bowl. I topped the sprouts with [...]

Sprouting Hulled Buckwheat for Breakfast

Sprouting Hulled Buckwheat A man at the Farmer’s Market yesterday told me about sprouting buckwheat. It sprouts quickly (1-2 days) and makes a great breakfast. We do eat buckwheat now and then, cooked, for breakfast, but the kids don’t enjoy it that much because it gets a bit slimy. According to this man, buckwheat — [...]

Microgreens Progress… and a Bit About Sprouts

I wrote on August 25, 2007 that I was going to try to grow microgreens. I royally messed up that first set of microgreens — buckwheat, sunflower and flax. According to Jeff, I sterilized them. That’s because I was so concerned about keeping them warm enough that I kept them covered all the time and [...]

Alfalfa Sprouts

This is my second batch of alfalfa sprouts using the Sproutmaster Sprouting Tray. It is turning out much better than the first. The difference is that I used too many seeds the first time around. I followed the directions but from now on, I’ll use half the amount recommended because it definitely made a difference. [...]
