Gluten Free 4-Grain Breakfast Porridge

By Wardeh on January 14, 2008

A take on the Genius Breakfast Cereal, only another grain is added here — teff. In addition, I’ve added a soaking to neutralize the phytic acid, would otherwise would interfere with mineral absorption.

1 cup millet
1/2 cup quinoa
1/4 cup amaranth
1/4 cup teff, brown or ivory
6 tablespoons raw apple cider vinegar or Kombucha
1 tablespoon cinnamon
6 cups pure [...]

Gluten-Free Cracked Grain Cereal Mix

By Wardeh on January 10, 2008

Gluten-Free Cracked Grain Cereal Mix
The following directions will help you crack grains in a Vita-Mix. Other grain mills also crack grains — refer to your mill’s manual for directions on this application.
Since we like a Cream of Wheat consistency for our hot cereal, these directions achieve a finer texture of cracking. Adjust accordingly for the [...]

Genius Breakfast Cereal

By Wardeh on June 13, 2007

Branching out here this morning… I’ve had this recipe saved to try for a few months. Someone shared it on a Yahoo! group. None of these grains have gluten and none of them are wheat (obviously). I’ll have to let you know what the family thinks. Naomi is scooping hers out right now.
My notes: I [...]

Cracked Grain Cereal Mix

By Wardeh on February 3, 2007

Commercial health food companies offer cracked grain cereals. I like to mix up my own for 2 reasons:
1) I can use more differing grains. While I have seen 12-grain and 7-grain cereal mixes for sale, I have never seen any for sale with as many as the 14 different grains as I currently crack and [...]

5-Spice Oatmeal

By Wardeh on October 16, 2006

I bought some Chinese 5-Spice Powder a long while ago, but haven’t really used it until lately. It originated in China and is comprised of equal parts of ground cinnamon, fennel, star anise, cloves, and Szechwan pepper.
My mother-in-love shared a porridge recipe with me from Laughing Horse Lodge in Montana. I haven’t made it successfully [...]

Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal

By Wardeh on September 19, 2006

Oatmeal weather again. I long ago stopped buying cold cereals because of the expense and started fixing hot cereals instead. We love having a warm tummy full of oatmeal. Usually I fix Decadent & Hearty Oatmeal, but this morning, I prepared Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal instead.
Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal

Decadent & Hearty Oatmeal

By Wardeh on March 21, 2006

I’m experimenting with our morning oatmeal. We used to eat super-sweet oatmeal, but when we tossed out white and brown sugar and quit using quite so much honey or maple syrup, the children stopped enjoying it. So I’m trying to make it yummy and nutritious. Lately, they have been saying, “This is good!” If you [...]
