Plastic Alternative: Freezer Storage for (Freshly-Milled) Flour

Plastic Alternative: Freezer Storage for (Freshly-Milled) Flour

By Wardeh on September 22, 2008

The solution to freezer storage of freshly-milled flours hit me like a ten pound bag of flour.
Five and ten pound bags of most grains and beans from Azure Standard come in double- or triple-walled paper bags. Why not reuse the bags to store flour?

Freezer Storage for Ground Nuts

Freezer Storage for Ground Nuts

By Wardeh on August 11, 2008

When I grind nuts — whether fine, medium-fine, or coarse meal — I do several cups at a time and store the excess in the freezer for use during the coming week(s). For some time now, I have been using quart- or pint-size glass jars to store the ground nuts, instead of plastic zipper-seal bags. [...]

GF Cracker Mix in a Jar -- Make Ahead or Gift

GF Cracker Mix in a Jar — Make Ahead or Gift

By Wardeh on August 10, 2008

When measuring out the ingredients to make a double-batch of Cheezy Gluten-Free Crackers, I fill a quart size jar with all the dry ingredients for another double-batch of crackers. I store it on the door of the freezer. It is ready for me to use sometime during the coming week. I just transfer the [...]

Wax Paper Covered Refrigerator Bowl

Wax Paper Covered Refrigerator Bowl

By Wardeh on August 5, 2008

Refrigerator storage sans plastic: Use natural wax paper to cover bowls. Hold the paper in place with a rubber band stretched around the bowl on top of the paper. The wax paper helps preserve moisture. If not concerned with moisture loss, parchment paper can be used. Both types of paper can be reused again and [...]

GF Bread Mixes in a Jar -- Time Saver or Great Gift!

GF Bread Mixes in a Jar — Time Saver or Great Gift!

By Wardeh on August 5, 2008

We packed up some flatbread mixes to take with us when visiting friends on Sunday. I normally reach for a plastic bag to store make-ahead mixes, but then I thought — why not a glass jar? As you may know, I’m on a mission to reduce my plastic use. This was a duh moment for [...]

Here I filled one of the large dishes (it holds 12 cups) with [...]

Trying Out Some Plastic Alternatives

Trying Out Some Plastic Alternatives

By Wardeh on July 24, 2008

I picked up my Azure Standard order yesterday. I don’t have to meet the truck anymore on late Monday nights, because a friend retrieves my order and then I go grab it from her when I’m out in town on Wednesdays. I am so thankful to have the help with that, being as we live [...]
