Strawberry Ice Cream

We are having a 10th birthday party today for Haniya with 9 little friends. We started out having 3 boys over from a friends’ family. Their sister is getting married this Saturday and their family has so much wedding stuff to do that we thought we’d have the little guys over. So they came… along [...]

Nutty Minty Carob Fudge Balls

These are a hit around our house lately! They are slightly frozen, which will make them a great treat come summer. They also happen to be very good for you. I’ve doubled the amount of tahini from the original recipe so we get more calcium in every bite. Nutty Minty Carob Fudge Balls original recipe [...]

Teff Mocha Cookies

I only modified this recipe a bit from the little booklet that came with the Teff grain I bought recently. For instance, the recipe didn’t call for any liquid and it obviously needed some! To make teff flour, you grind the whole teff grain in a coffee grinder, blender or Vita-Mix dry container. Whiz until [...]

Halawa – Halvah

Halawa – Halvah Original recipe by Bruce Weinstein, modified by Wardeh Harmon Makes about 1-1/2 pounds Wardeh’s note: In the Middle East, both Jewish and Arabic people love this dessert. Arabic people call it Halawa and Jewish people call it Halvah. Everyone calls it healthy and yummy! The commercial varieties, however, are NOT healthy. This [...]

Chocolate Walnut Brownies

My excuse for making brownies tonight — Jeff’s birthday is tomorrow! Is that good enough? We won’t be celebrating it until next weekend, so tonight we had to have something. These turned out so good — rich, dense, not too sweet. Dark. I changed around a recipe that a friend found for me in a [...]

Oatmeal Pie Crust

I was really happy a couple of years ago to find this super easy whole grain pie crust recipe. No rolling required at all. Just mix the ingredients together and press it in the pie plate!

Pumpkin Pie (Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, Egg-Free)

We love this pumpkin pie. I modified the recipe from a raw foods cookbook a few years ago. This was when we first began eliminating dairy and eggs for the sake of our son Mikah’s food allergies. The pumpkin and spice flavors come through so naturally and appetizingly. It is really a good pumpkin pie. Edit (11/17/09): Even though Mikah no longer has allergies to dairy or eggs, we still make this pie. :)

Chocolate Banana Shake

These were a hit today! A tasty and healthy treat, perfect for a warm summer afternoon. Chocolate Banana Shake Serves 2 3 frozen bananas, broken into at least halves 2 tablespoons raw honey 1 tablespoon cocoa powder 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 2 cups almond milk (or other milk of your choice) Combine all ingredients in Vita-Mix [...]
