Basic Jerky – Not So Tough
As promised, here’s the jerky recipe I’m (loosely) following. I looked around for ground meat jerky recipes after I read that commercial jerky is often made with ground meat. We knew that jerky was pretty soft, and we thought it would work better for the people in my family that have teeth issues… sensitive teeth or braces. (I’m sorry, Dr. Price, but we learned about you too late.)
Enzyme-Rich Homemade Larabars
I’ve long wanted make a homemade Larabar, but I really got inspired this week when reading about foods that are excellent sources of digestive enzymes. The key ingredients in Larabars – dates and nuts – are two of those foods. I use soaked and dehydrated nuts in these homemade Larabars, making them a digestive enzyme-rich food!
Lacto-Fermented (Naturally Pickled) Turnips and Beets
I’d like to share how simple and fun lacto-fermentation of vegetables can be. I’ve only done a bit of it, but enough to see that lacto-fermented vegetables taste fabulous and are very easy to make. What I love the most about it is that I don’t have to heat anything (though some recipes call for a bit of cooking) and that measuring is not that precise. This is the kind of anti-cooking I like!
Black Bean Spread
This spread is just fabulous. Really hit the spot today. You can see our delicious and simple lunch in the picture (see also Four-Grain Flatbread).
The recipe is flexible; a couple of the ingredients are optional. Can’t beat that! I’m sure it could be livened up with cilantro or cayenne pepper.
4 cups cooked black beans (see [...]

Stuffed Grape Leaves (Dolmas) — with Pictures
Stuffed grape leaves are one of my all-time favorite foods. When we had them growing up, it was a family affair. Whoever was home loved to get in on the rolling. My mom would lead us in making a huge pot of them. We would eat off them for days, if they lasted that long! [...]
Roasted Toasted Hazelnuts
Our pastor’s wife gave us some deliciously toasted local hazelnuts. She also gave me some raw hazelnuts to turn into hazelnut butter for her family to try. I just finished toasting the raw hazelnuts using her directions, which are:
Roasted Toasted Hazelnuts
Preheat oven to 275 degrees. Spread raw (shelled) hazelnuts out on a baking sheet [...]
Hummus
The kids and I just finished eating our lunch today. We are taking a break from the Spring Cleaning that Sylvia is coordinating at the T2CHK Message Board. I can’t remember the last time a lunch has been so refreshing!
We have gobs of leftover tabouli from last night. I love leftover tabouli! The flavors just [...]
