Please forgive me as I broach a stinky subject…
…the bathroom. And those odors that fill it from time to time. 😉
Or… the bedroom that smells like stinky socks a lot.
Just because we’re natural mamas doesn’t mean we’ll put up with those smells. No way!
Yet, we don’t want to be spraying toxic chemicals in our homes, either.
Have you looked at the ingredients in Febreeze or other air fresheners? Scary stuff!
Enter: the homemade essential oil air freshener.
So easy to make. Smells soooo good. And totally good for you (and the air you breathe!).
I’ve got several spritzers in several rooms in the house. Especially the bathroom. 😉 They work wonders.
Let’s make one together on today’s #AskWardee, shall we?
The Question: How Do You Make Homemade Air Freshener?
Norma C. asks:
Wardee, I need some help. The bathroom is so stinky sometimes. The fan doesn’t do a good enough job. I need something that works that’s also homemade and healthy for the family to spray to cover up the odors after going #2. Thank you! I love your show!
Norma, I have just the solution for you. It’s a homemade essential oil room spritzer, aka air freshener. I keep one in each bathroom (and I even use them as a hand sanitizer, too).
You only need 3 ingredients — essential oil of choice, rubbing alcohol, and distilled or spring water — plus a spray bottle. I make mine in either 2- or 4-ounce glass spritzer bottles. They really work, and you can feel comfortable with the ingredients.
Homemade Essential Oil Air Freshener
- 20 to 30 drops essential oil of choice — I like peppermint, tea tree oil, or lavender.
- 1 liquid ounce rubbing alcohol
- 1 liquid ounce distilled or spring or filtered water
- 2-ounce amber or blue glass spray bottle* (or double the ingredients for a 4-ounce)
*The bottle should be dark glass so light doesn’t degrade the quality of the essential oils. You can also use those light opaque metal spray bottles if you wish.
Combine all ingredients in an empty spritzer bottle. Put on the spray top.
To use as an air freshener: Spray 2 to 3 times in desired location.
To use as a hand sanitizer (grown-ups only; use with caution and do your own research for children and babies): Spray 1 to 2 times on one hand, then rub hands together.
To use as a bedding/pillow spritzer: Spray a few times on on bedding or pillows to freshen them up. This is wonderful right before bed if lavender is the essential oil in your spritzer!
