Video: Pickle Pro Lid + Giveaway

Jerri from Homesteader Supply just sent me one of her new gadgets. She’s always coming up with cool and helpful tools for traditional kitchens. The newest one is awesome. The Pickle Pro Lid is an airlock lid that fits on all wide-mouth canning jars… so we can do airlock fermenting with jars we already have! (Be sure to get to the end of this post for the giveaway.)

In the short video above, I’ve just finished making Fermented Cranberry-Apple-Orange Relish. You’ll see me packing the relish in a half gallon mason jar, then showing you how to use the Pickle Pro lid for the fermentation stage.

By the way, the making of the relish itself is this month’s eCourse thank you video for standard and premium members. (And until New Year’s Day, new subscribers can pick this thank you video as one of up to 5 free videos.)

What is the Pickle Pro Lid?

The Pickle Pro Lid is a wide-mouth canning jar lid modified with an airlock. What’s so great about an airlock? It allows fermenting gases to escape — meaning less explosions from pent-up gases. At the same time, the water barrier prevents organisms in the outside air from entering the fermentation to spoil it or cause off-flavors.

The end result is tastier and more successful fermentation. Use the lid on any wide-mouth jar, from pint to quart to half-gallon, and for fermenting your pickles, relishes, salsas, krauts and anything else you’d ferment in a canning jar.

I think a Pickle Pro Lid would make a great gift for yourself or traditional cooks you know. If you’re more inclined to make one yourself, check out these instructions for a DIY airlock.

I am a reluctant beginner, reluctant because I don’t have experience or equipment for fermentation, but I love real dill pickles and sauerkraut!! I’ve seen other similar equipment, but this appears event less complicated.

  3. Becki says:

I would love to win this! I would say I am an advanced beginner, I have made fermented carrots.

  4. illya gonzalez says:

The regular lids start to oxidize after a couple of washes in the dish washer. This would be a great solution on top of the airtight benefit.

  5. My hubby loves anything pickled! I like to make a salt brine and pickle fresh produce, eggs, ramps etc. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to use the Pickle Pro Lid!!!

I would LOVE one of these! I just tried lacto-fermenting for the first time last month and failed. . . But I will not give up:) This product looks really useful.

  7. Christi says:

I would love to win and get more experience fermenting a variety of things; I have only fermented saurkraut but nothing with an airlock. Oh and I make kombucha if that counts :)

  8. Deborah says:

My fermentation efforts have not gone very smoothly and this looks like a product even I could use! Would love to win it!

  9. Robin says:

I haven’t fermented very much but this pickle lid might tempt me enough to start looking through the seed catalog that arrived the other day and actually GROW something just for pickling :)

  10. Emily says:

Would love to try the airlock lid! I’ve heard great things about it, but haven’t ventured out there yet. I thought about making my own but haven’t been brave enough to do that either. :) This is a great find! Thanks for sharing!

  11. Cathy says:

This looks like an awesome product! I’ve never used the airlock method when fermenting. Not yet, anyway! Thanks.

  12. Dee says:

I think this lid would be the momentum to getting me started with fermenting.

  13. Susie says:

I’ve been playing around with fermentation but would like to expand my repertoire beyond the few things I’ve done (lacto-fermented carrots, pickles). I want to try sauerkraut and many other things. This Pickle Pro lid would be perfect!!! thank you for offering this give-away!!

  15. Ellen says:

I am eager to try fermenting, but am nervous to do it without an airlock, so this would be great. So hoping to give it a try!

  16. charity says:

How cool! I haven’t tried an airlock ferment yet, but would love to without a chance of having a faulty (on my part) airlock :)

  17. Molly says:

I really want to ferment more things, but I’m always worried about doing it right. This product seems like it would help take some of the uncertainty away! I’ve never tried airlock fermenting!

  18. Amy says:

I’ve not had the opportunity to try fermentation with an air lock, but really want to. I was going to ask for the jars for Christmas, but this seems even better, since I already have the jars.

I would love to have one of these. It would make it so much easier to ferment sauerkraut. Thanks for the giveaway! :)

  20. Lorie says:

I am new to fermentation but realize its importance in good health for me and my kids. My boys 3 and 4 love pickles and pickled things. This would make it easy.

  21. Molly says:

Wow, this looks really helpful. We have been making kefir for about 6 months, covering the jar with a coffee filter, secured with a rubber band. It works okay for letting air out, but the air lock looks much better for keeping floating critters out. Thanks for the tip!

  25. Shreela says:

I originally fermented sour kraut in a 5 gallon plastic bucket, before it became common knowledge about acidic liquids leaching plastic yuckies. And if that wasn’t enough plastic, we prevented mold by laying cling wrap over the top of the kraut! LOL

Then I bought a crock from my neighbors’ garage sale, but until I remember to buy a lead test, I’ll wait – it looks pretty old.

I have many wide-mouth canning jars though, and could make more sour kraut in those with a special air lock for canning jars. I’d like to try mixed veggie ferments/relishes too. I bookmarked the Pickle Pro airlock site ^_^

  26. Amy says:

The air-lock lid looks great! I have canned pickles in the past but not left out to ferment. I have done kefir for awhile. I love to update and upgrade my kitchen supplies. This would be very useful!!

  27. Doxie Deb says:

I’d love to try one of these, I’ve not done any fermenting yet, but just started your classes, so am hoping to do some soon, and think one of these would be nice to use when I do!! :)

I have done no fermenting but have recently begun to participate in your webinars and am seeing more and more things about how healthful fermentation is so am aimed at beginning to make my own stuff since it is big bucks for store bought.

  29. Bethany says:

Very cool! I’d love one for making saurkraut. My husband uses something similar for brewing beer. We thought about trying to modify it for kraut making, but weren’t adventurous enough.

  32. Mary Korte says:

Yeah, I want one of these! It seems way more affordable than other similar products and I like the versatility of being able to use different sized jars. Thank you for all of the great info you share and for this fun opportunity to win something useful. :)

  33. Meagan says:

I would like one, because even though I know you can just scrape the mold off the top of a spoiled jar, it still grosses me out to eat it (even though it tastes and smells fine). Having an airlock would definitely help reduce/ eliminating that from occurring.

  34. anne says:

I would love one for pickles and kimchee!

  35. erin rae says:

I would love one of these for pickles and kraut! I’ve never tried air-lock fermentation – I typically do closed ferments in canning jars, but often end up with either overflowing jars or having to throw out the top layer since it gets a bit off.

  36. Sarah H says:

I’ve been able to make sauerkraut but not much else. did try an airlock once but it didn’t turn out -I don’t think my recipe was any good. :) Would LOVE one to fit my wide-mouth jars!

  37. Erika Billedeaux says:

I would LOVE to win this! I will buy more even if I dont. I have used a different airlock fermentation system in the past and LOVED the results – the product fermented faster and the flavors seemed to develop better. I made cortido and sauerkraut. (I did regular kraut on the countertop as an experiment – see which one was better and see how long it took.) The airlock definately won! I also have made several different pickles with my system. Worked like a charm! I want to try fruits, but since I moved I cant find my lid – just my airlock… Time for a new one!

  38. sarah says:

i would love to try these because i dont have an airlock lid, so my ferments often overflow, and sometimes get moldy :(

  39. Bethany says:

Oooh, these look so neat! I’d love to have one! Sometimes when I make dilly beans, the taste is off, so maybe if I tried an airlock, that would help! And, my jars always overflow when I do salsa. This would be fantastic!

  40. Laura S. says:

I want to try fermenting so badly! I am working on healing the gut flora of my oldest child and this will help immensely in the next step of fermentation. I haven’t tried it so any gadgets would be helpful!

  41. Diane robinson says:

    I am a canning addict.I need help!!

  42. Eliza J says:

I would love to try fermenting and this looks like a do-able way for me to try it. I like the idea that I can use a canning jar and start off making small amounts. Sounds wonderful!

  43. Lisa H. says:

I’ve been looking at these for some time, as my ferments sometimes get so bubbly they actually leak out of my closed jars and leave a big mess. I’ve made sauerkraut, cortido, kimchi, pickles, peppers, and kefirs(dairy and water) and Kombucha! I’d love to do more, though, and this would be a great way to encourage me to get into fermenting more regularly.
    Thank you for the giveaway!

I haven’t done a lot of fermenting just because I am leery of the gases not being able to go anywhere once the lid is done. I’ve been wanting to make my own sauerkraut for a long time, but I find the process a little intimidating without a large fermentation crock. This lid would be just what I needed to get started. :)

    Wardeh,

Thank you for showing how this works. I am new to fermenting foods (and preparing traditional food in general). I have tried fermenting a couple of things using your recipes and videos. Not sure what I am doing, so I think the Pickle Pro Lid would make me feel more confident about fermenting. I love all the info. on your site. Thanks again!

Hi! I am working through the Fundamentals E-Course and would love to learn how to ferment veggies. This lid looks like it would simplify the process.

Thank you for all that you are doing to help me provide healing foods for my family!

Having a Pickle-Pro lid would be fantastic way to actually boost me over the hill with fermenting. I’ve several times bought cabbage and lemons to ferment because I thought I could work around not having one of these, but alas I’ve been hesitant. This would do it finally!
