Hopping (Tuesday Twister – 8/25/09)

My Tuesday Twister posts are my weekly round-up of what’s going on in my kitchen and our lives, as it pertains to real food. So here we go – I’ll catch you up on what’s twisting in my kitchen this week!

I don’t have ANY pictures to share this week, as I haven’t tried anything new. I’m getting ready to go on vacation. I have spent three days sewing, and the rest of the time making my travel menu and doing advance food preparation. So I’m afraid I can’t set the standard for a Tuesday Twister post. :) But I’ll still share what’s been happening. I’ve been hopping!

  • Real Food Travel Menu – I made it the other day and you can see it here.
  • Starter Cultures – Taking half my kefir grains to keep making kefir at our destination. Leave half for the gal who is milking the goats, as she wants to keep it going. Fed my sourdough starter, making a last batch of bread today, then taking the starter with me to bake bread on our vacation. Taking a Kombucha scoby to my mom, leaving the rest here covered with sweetened tea. Leaving two gallon jugs of finished Kombucha open, but covered with a cloth napkin and rubber band (so they don’t explode, but also don’t allow fruit flies to indulge).
  • Bread Baking – Got one last batch of sourdough bread going in the oven today, and we’ll take it with us for the road and after our arrival.
  • Cheesemaking – I’ve used up almost every last bit of goat milk in back-to-back batches of chevre, queso fresco, and kefir. Taking some with us and freezing some. The milk from the last milking will go in the fridge for the gal who is taking over for us.
  • Cooking Ahead – Potatoes, sausages, hard-boiled eggs, slicing cheese, packing feta in brine for the cooler, all these little things that must be done in order to pack them in the cooler ready to eat!
  • Egg Shells – The last of our pastured egg shells are in the oven now. They’ll be crushed up and supply calcium for the milk goats while we’re gone.
  • Animal Feed – One last trip to the feed store today to get a couple bales of alfalfa hay and whole oats for the goats.
  • People Feed :) – One last trip to Localvore, to get fresh fruit and veggies for the road. Possibly also some local coffee, which is unusual for us, but we think we might need some caffeine for the drive. ;) Pack up the coolers, pack up our gear, and depart…

So, that’s it for me – what’s twisting in your kitchen? To participate in the Tuesday Twister Blog Carnival, visit this post. See you there! You have been hopping! What a great idea to take your kefir grains and sd starter along with you to visit family. Will you have access to goat’s milk or will you use cow for your kefir on the road? Have a wonderful trip/visit.
