“That’s the best dessert EVER!”

strawberries

“That’s the best desert EVER!” said my kids, practically in unison, jumping up and down with excitement when I told them our dessert was going to be strawberries and raw goat milk.

You know we’re not having refined or natural concentrated sweeteners during the month of May. We are so happy that strawberry season coincides with this challenge! The very first berries of the season were ripe at the natural U-Pick farm (Sterken Farms) on Wednesday. We got there first and combed the rows for the red delights – and were rewarded with five pounds of some of the best strawberries we’ve ever had – juicy and sweet.

When we arrived, the lady said, “Are you guys afraid of snakes?” “No!” the kiddoes scoffed (it is true, they’re not afraid of the garden variety of snakes). So she said, “That’s good, because there are some snakes in the strawberry patch.” Sure enough, we saw two snakes slide from row to row, one pulling the other (weird – we couldn’t figure out why). Naomi and Mikah tried to find them after that, but were not successful.

Still, we got those five pounds of strawberries, so we went home happy. Our milking does, while not giving us as much milk as we’d like — due to our inexperience and their nursing of kids — serve up incredible milk. The other day we served it to friends who said it was what milk should taste like, no matter whether cow or goat! It is so, so, so, so good.

If you’re not already in strawberry season, you should be soon. What’s your favorite way to eat fresh, local strawberries?

Remember that strawberries, grown conventionally, carry the 6th highest load of residual pesticides – so it is very important to purchase organic, naturally grown strawberries!

Beautiful! We were promised strawberries in our CSA box this week and I cannot wait until they arrive. So perfect, so little and so sweet. I wonder what was up with that snake though.

They look beautiful and so yummy. I don’t have strawberries yet, but I have the promise of strawberries. My plants are full of flowers! :-) However, no fresh goat milk to put on them. :-(

Yummm, strawberries and goat milk! The kids delight in such simple pleasures! (especially the ones they pick–and milk themselves!) How special! (Even snakes!)

I learned at a recent dehydrating class that there is only a 20% nutritional value loss with dehydrating foods (compared to 40% with freezing, and 60% with canning), so I dehydrated some of our strawberries (with the leaves for added vitamin C) and took them hiking this weekend. Amazingly delicious and simply fun to eat!

    Love you, Mom
