Two young ladies are coming over this afternoon to learn how to make Kombucha. Last week, at their house, I gave them a taste of it, and they liked it, even though it was a bit on the sour side.
Just a bit.
Last week, I also told them about the easy no-knead artisan bread method. So I am thinking I will try to squeeze in a bread lesson while they’re here too. Both the bread and the Kombucha are easy. The difficulty is trying to not to talk so much!
What are skills you’ve shared with friends? What skills have friends shared with you? I love it that we can learn from each other!

Take the guesswork out of what to fix, what to buy and what to prepare. This week:
Class materials compiled into easy downloads:
Well . . . I learned to make Kombucha from YOU! Ever so grateful! I just ordered the artisan bread in 5 minutes a day book.
Hi Wardeh, I’ve just brewed my green tea according to your instructions. The mature kombucha and scoby is waiting. I’m really nervous about mold but we’ll see…!
This is my first attempt!
This is so exciting! I hope you’ll let me know how it turns out. Don’t worry too much about the mold! It would be freaky if you got mold.
Before we moved to our 60 acres we went to some friends for “Chicken Butchering Lessons”. It was really helpful to us when we had our own chickens after we moved. We also asked them many questions about living in the country/buying land/etc.
A couple of years ago, when my friends and I all had preschoolers, we got together a few times to cook while the kiddos played. We made chicken broth, tortillas, and one time we just browned up a bunch of ground beef to take home and freeze. It was very fun and we all felt so productive while we socialized.
I have had a few friends over at different times, to teach them about bread baking and tortilla making. It was fun. Next week I’ll be working with a friend on knitting. That’s not food, sorry.
I LOVE those types of visits! I much prefer getting busy with a friend than sitting around while visiting. A few years ago a girlfriend and I exchanged lesson-visits too. I taught her how to make bread and she showed me how to make goats milk soap. She’s gone on to make lots of bread, I however, have not made any soap yet.
I showed another friend how to butcher chickens. Old time skills are something I enjoy.
Hey Wardeh! I’ve been tasting my kombucha for a few days now and today it was ready! I’m so excited! I didn’t have any mold and my scoby looks even more healthy than it did when I started on Tuesday. The color is perfect and the carbonation is just right. I poured most of the kombucha in an old *clean* balsamic vinegar jug and left a bit of the mature kombucha with the scoby to wait for more brewed tea! One thing I discovered this time around is that I left the tea bags in too long for my taste. Also, I forgot to follow your friend’s directions to wait to put the sweet in until after the boiling has subsided. This new batch I make will surely be even better! Thanks for teaching us!
Also, I chatted about sprouted grains with a friend today. I have the whole grains, she has a dehydrator and another friend has a vita-mix. We may get together to make and share sprouted grain flour.
Gillie, this is fantastic news – about both things! I’m very happy that the Kombucha turned out for you and that you’ll be starting the sprouting/dehydrating of grains soon.
i would love information on making sprouted grain flour. i have had a hard time finding the “how to” and recipes for sprouted grains. HELP!
Hi, Tami – This is how I sprout grains for bread:

And I use these recipes:
http://gnowfglins.com/2009/02/02/easy-artisan-bread-with-sprouted-grains/ (a no-knead recipe)
http://gnowfglins.com/2008/01/24/whole-spelt-bread-3-large-loaves/ (a kneaded recipe, subbing sprouted spelt flour for the regular spelt flour)
My favorite grain to do is spelt!
Hope this helps- let me know if you have questions.
Hey Wardeh! Look what I found! I was looking for articles on kombucha and found where I told you about making goats milk soap with a friend! Haha!
