Hummus on Toast

chana-dal

The best hummus we’ve ever had. We all agreed. On the advice of my mom, I purchased some small Middle Eastern garbanzo beans, called Chana Dal.

Pictured left, you can see the beans dry and then cooked. (See How to Cook Dry Beans.)

What made the hummus so good? Well, I think it was those beans, for a start. But also, I used  purchased roasted sesame tahini, fresh from Hummingbird Wholesale in Eugene, OR. Pictured below, the hummus is spread on toasted easy artisan bread from sprouted grains.

I bought some of those beans and didn’t know if they would work as well for hummus … glad to see it does. I wasn’t sure because when I cooked them, the peels did not come off, so would have to be blended into it. I didn’t get that Vitamix that I mentioned a month or so ago. :( So I’d be using my kitchenaid blender still.

If you have a food processor, that works too. In fact, I like a food processor better than the Vitamix for hummus. I am sorry you didn’t get that Vitamix. :(

I also prefer the food processor for hummus. I got these garbanzos last fall to try and I liked the hummus with them. I’m also using the Hummingbird roasted tahini. Yum. I just made a batch of hummus 2 days ago. My whole family loves it. I think it is one of my most favorite foods. We use it on bread or pitas or wrap sandwiches and as a vegie dip.

Is raw tahini available anywhere around here?

      Kelli,

It is available through Hummingbird Wholesale. I just bought 1 gallon and it is more than plenty for me. Actually, I purchased the toasted tahini. I have three quarts in the freezer. Would you like some? I’d have to look up the price, but I know it is reasonable.

Otherwise, at Sherm’s, in the health food section, with the natural peanut butters, you should find some pint size jars of it. Not nearly as fresh and probably more expensive! ;)

just wondering where to buy these beans. I haven’t been able to find them in my area.

    thanks.

p.s. very grateful for your website.

    • Wardeh says:

Shari, you’re looking for “chickpeas” or “garbanzo beans” – they are the same thing. You should find them in the bulk beans at most any health food store, or grocery store with a health food section. I recommend purchasing organic and from a store with good turnover. If you have access to a natural food warehouse (such as Azure Standard or United Natural Foods), you can order from there, too. Let me know if you have trouble!

Channa dal is different from chickpeas. Bob’s red mill sells it for one. Indian food stores as well.
