Sprouting Mix: Alfalfa, Red Clover and Fenugreek

The following combination includes 45% of each of alfalfa and red clover seeds, and 10% of fenugreek seeds. I prefer and recommend choosing organic seeds.

  • To make 4 cups of the sprouting mix, combine 1-3/4 cups of alfalfa seeds, 1-3/4 cups of red clover seeds, and 1/2 cup of fenugreek seeds.
  • To make 3 cups of the sprouting mix, combine 1-1/2 cups of the alfalfa seeds, 1-1/2 cups of red clover seeds, and 1/2 cup of fenugreek seeds.

Store the mix in a jar or airtight container in a cool, dark place. Here’s a little about sprouting I posted previously.

  1. What do the fenugreek sprouts taste like, Wardeh? The seeds smell heavenly, I have some in my pantry. I don’t know that they would sprout but I could try!
Right now I am sprouting alfalfa, mung bean and radish.

They’re a little bitter, which is why keeping them down to 10% is best. But not too bitter, just a bitter kick to the bunch, if you know what I mean. You wouldn’t want a ton of them in there but a few is great. Give it a try; I hope yours sprout! Right now I am sprouting the mix (above) along these on their own — radish; mung bean; lentil; broccoli. They are all really tasty!

  2. I can’t believe you’re sprouting broccoli for salads! That is so cool! What good ideas I find here :)
Thank you for the info on fenugreek. I wonder if my guys will notice it… :)

Sylvia, I don’t they will, if you keep the percentage down. The broccoli taste so good, but they’re a little tricky. I’ve had batches spoil more often than not. I think they might be too cold, so now instead of a tray, I’m trying a jar — it keeps the sprouts warmer. I hope they work better. And I’d like to do cabbage and chia and anything else I can get. But the cabbage I can’t find, and the chia is out (at Azure). I think it would be neat to do carrots. My goal is not to have to buy produce, other than fruit. We’re not set up for gardening, so sprouting is working for us for the time being.

I’m curious what your guys will think, too. So be sure and tell me!

I look forward to hearing more about sprouting, and thank you for the “mix”, I never thought of doing a combination of seeds. Great Idea!

That sounds really yummy! I need to sprout some for my salad on Monday. Thanks for the reminder. :D

I’ve used fenugreek seeds in cooking but had no idea that you could sprout with them! In India, they say that fenugreek seeds are good for breast-feeding. I look forward to more on your sprouting corner! You had mentioned a while ago that sprouting may help reduce your vegetable bill. That really spoke to me, i would like my family to eat more vegetables and keep our grocery bill down.

    Wardeh,

Do you get your seeds from Azure? Or do you have another preferred source? Thanks!

    Ellen

  7. Wardeh says:

Ellen, I have been able to get most seeds from Azure. They don’t have the organic red clover, though, so I started getting those from Hummingbird Wholesale. At this point, I do get most seeds from HW. But in the past, I was able to get almost everything through Azure.
