I haven’t had a real Orange Julius for a long time, so I can’t really say if this drink is a true replica. But it is yummy. We made it for a mid-morning snack today in answer to Jeff’s hankering (and inspiration).
Healthy Orange “Julius”
makes (3) 8-ounce servings
- 3 oranges
- 2 cups ice cubes
- 1 tablespoon raw agave syrup or raw honey
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup almond milk
Combine all ingredients in blender container or Vita-Mix wet container. Blend on HIGH until smooth.

I bet this was better! I had fond memories of Orange Julius being SOOOO good when we occasionally indulged as a child, but having had one a couple times in the past few years, I ended up being really disappointed. They were at different places, and they weren’t really anything to rave about. I thought perhaps the first time that I just got a “bad batch”, but then it happened again. So… I wouldn’t buy another one. But sometimes I make my own at home. Yumm!
(Oh, and the [most likely terribly unhealthy] Triple Berry Smoothie that Orange Julius makes is DELICOUS)
I have good memories of Orange Julius, too. We frequently got them when we went to the mall. I wonder what made yours that you bought so bad? Love, Wardeh
I love these smoothies! Here’s my favorite Orange Julius version (not so healthy as yours!)
OJ Frosty
1 12 oz can of orange juice concentrate
2 cups milk (we use raw)
1 cup granulated sugar (we use Rapadura to taste)
2 cups water
2 tsp. vanilla
about 30 ice cubes
Blend in VitaMix. I think it is a great copy of Orange Julius!
Let me know what you think!

Thanks for sharing your recipe! This must make alot. And does the real Orange Julius have that much sugar? I bet this tastes good. I will try it with OJ concentrate but I’ll reduce the sugar and use agave instead. Love, Wardeh
Ha-ha! We were still adjusting our taste buds last year at this time. I still make this recipe but use only about 1/4 cup honey. Sometimes I also use real oranges. I think the real Orange Julies DOES use that much sugar! This recipe fills my VitaMix and serves all ten of us.

Hi, there! Thanks for the update on your recipe — I’m glad to hear you’ve cut back on the sugar.
Love, Wardeh
Stopped reading to make this - so delicious and fresh tasting vs. the “real” thing. I had only two oranges and soy rather than almond milk but it works. Adding this into my routine for sure!
