This is my second batch of alfalfa sprouts using the Sproutmaster Sprouting Tray. It is turning out much better than the first. The difference is that I used too many seeds the first time around. I followed the directions but from now on, I’ll use half the amount recommended because it definitely made a difference.
We’re all done with school for the day. I love finishing before lunch. I have some phone calls and research to do now. The research can be done on the internet. I am looking for information on the different organic certifications and their particular standards. Then I am going for my daily walk. I hopefully will have some time to knit before I have to make dinner.

Take the guesswork out of what to fix, what to buy and what to prepare. This week:

I have the sprout box. Do you find the alfalfa seeds fall through the holes? I love sprouts.
Yes, they do fall through the holes, but only a little during each rinse. Most of them stay in. We love sprouts, too. I should have been more specific in my post about how many seeds to use in the tray. They recommend 1/4 cup, but I think 1/8 cup works better. Have you used your Sproutmaster before? How do you like it?
“Have you used your Sproutmaster before? How do you like it?” Yes, but I only have one tray and I think I lost the little divider. Not happy about that. I have only used a mix of seeds or the bigger like mung beans in it. Haven’t tried just Alfalfa seeds (my fav). I like it a lot. I like that I don’t have to invert it to drain the seeds and more seeds seem to sprout in it than in jars. I think that is due to the seeds being spread out and not on top of each other.
I sprouted wheat in there last month and that was yummy. I think I’ll go sprout something now. (lol)
I use a jar with a screen lid because we don’t eat that many at a time. I think I’ve had that jar and lid for 25 years!
What are the ways you normally use your sprouts?
Michelle, I only have the one tray too. I think maybe next month I’ll buy another so I can have two crops going. I’m intrigued by the thought of sprouting wheat! Thanks for the idea.
Sylvia, I have the jar and screen, too (but mine isn’t 25 years old
). It didn’t make enough for us, although I liked it just fine. I don’t think I’m that creative with sprouts… we just use them on salads and sandwiches. How do you use yours?
Oh, I’m not creative with them either. I Just thought you might be
I use them in salads and sandwiches. I sprout mung beans to use in stir fry. I have heard of people juicing them to use as a green drink.
I used to be on a Christian Self Reliant List where I learned how to grow them in new panty hose, but I never tried it. Some of those folks used sprouts in casseroles, breads and soups too, again I enver tried it I like them raw rather than the idea of them being cooked.
I also have the jars and use them once in a while.
I have used sprouts mostly in salads. Once I ran out of lettuce and just had sprouts of all kinds. We didn’t even miss the lettuce for our salad that night. Sprouts for me are good in salads, pitas or wraps, and stir-fry. I forgot to start my sprouts. I’ll go do that now.
Where did you get your sprouter tray? I have tried sprouting lentils and mung beans in a plastic tupperware colander and then inserting it in a plastic bag for a miniature greenhouse effect.
Traci — These are Sproutmaster sprouting trays. I got them through Azure Standard. You can also get them through amazon.
Lentils and mung beans work best in a jar for me, though. They’re a little too big for these trays. I like the trays for smaller seeds, and jars for bigger seeds and beans and grains.
